New for September: our 20-guide 3C buying library is complete —start with the laptop picks

About us

About SpecCourt

SpecCourt writes buying guides for the 3C gear people actually buy: laptops, phones, headphones, monitors, chargers and the smart-home kit that quietly runs a flat. We are not a review lab, and we do not pretend to be one — we are a small editorial team that reads specifications carefully, checks retailer listings, and explains the trade-off a product makes.

How we choose products

Each guide starts with a scenario, not a product. A commuting student, a renter who cannot drill into a wall, someone packing a single carry-on bag for a two-week trip — the scenario decides which specifications matter and which ones are marketing. Only then do we look at what is actually available.

For every product we keep a short record with four things:

  • Published specifications. Taken from the manufacturer's own product page or press material.
  • Best for. The reader scenario where the product is the sensible choice.
  • The trade-off. What you give up by choosing it — ports, weight, panel quality, subscription requirements.
  • Live retailer links. So the check-a-price step lands on a real listing rather than a stale number.

How we verify, and what we do not claim

We do not publish measurements, benchmark results, battery rundowns, sample counts or clinical-style findings we have not produced ourselves. When a figure appears — battery life, brightness, charging wattage — it is flagged as a manufacturer claim and listed in the guide's specs block with a link to the source. Where a specification might have changed since launch, we tell you the date we last checked it: every guide ends with a Sources & further reading list and a last-checked date.

We work in the open about the limits of that approach. Spec sheets do not tell you how a keyboard feels after 2,000 words, or whether a hinge wobbles on a train tray table. When a guide cannot answer something from published information, it says so instead of inventing an experience.

Affiliate commissions and independence

SpecCourt is reader-supported. Product links in our guides are affiliate links: if you buy through one, we may receive a commission. It costs you nothing extra, and it is the only reason this site has no pop-ups, no autoplay video and no sponsored content presented as editorial.

  • Commission never determines ranking. We decide what to recommend, then add the offers.
  • Retailers do not see a guide before publication and cannot edit it afterwards.
  • No brand pays for a "best" label, and no guide is written around a commission rate.
  • Every commercial page carries a disclosure above the first affiliate link, linking to the full Affiliate Disclosure.

Who writes this

Guides are written and signed by the SpecCourt editorial team: an editor responsible for the overall guide structure, a product researcher who compiles specifications and availability, and a standards reviewer who checks the disclosure, sourcing and last-checked dates before publication. We credit the team rather than individual bylines because every guide passes through all three roles — and we would rather be accurate about who did the work than invent a persona for the sake of a photo.

Photography and credits

Editorial photography on SpecCourt is royalty-free stock used under the Pexels license, which permits commercial use without attribution. We still credit each photographer in the caption of the image it appears with, and we keep the full list alongside the site's source files. Photographs illustrate the scenario being written about; they are not photographs of the specific product under review unless the caption says so. We do not use manufacturer press imagery for products we have not handled.

Corrections

If a specification is wrong, a product has been discontinued, or a link no longer resolves, email [email protected]. We update the page, adjust the last-checked date, and note material changes at the bottom of the guide. Corrections are free and we do not require a reason.
